Glad I watched this video! Thanks Kevin! Just did some testing, and I think I see how centralized taxonomies work. The piece I was missing was -> where in the heck do I create the data that would populate a taxonomy post - like a single service page? I created a dummy taxonomy "services" in ACF and then linked it to my own testimonials. From there I opened up my testimonials cpt to discover the services taxonomy in the dropdown. What you see when you click on "services" in the dropdown was the answer: It's where you can create the data that feeds into whatever archive templates you would create in Bricks -> templates. I clicked "Add new service" which created a new service (similar to creating a new post). But, unlike a CPT, this taxonomy post does not have the big Gutenberg area (that big old white blank canvas where you can enter text). It's very trim. That's where ACF comes into play - Then I created an ACF field group (with dummy fields) and linked it to "taxonomy is equal to service". That gives the taxonomy post more fields and makes it workable. Was also very pleased to find that ACF quick edits works on these taxonomy posts - Now I can show a column that sorts the order of services for example (preferred service first in the loop)

#DearWordPress 1.Re-commit to CMS - I'm glad you felt the need to - there certainly is a lack of direction in recent months. 2. Freeze the Gutenberg features - good move. You've designed it so people can make their own and others have been using it in a much better way than you have. An example - Greenshift which I absolutely love. 3. Fully unify the UI - yes I agree with this too. 4. Ask higher standards and better value content from creators. Yes I can relate to lack of support with themes in the past which is why I decide to take a bespoke build approach for clients. And then again you have creators like Greenshift who come along and blow things out of the park. I was using GSAP before Greenshift arrived but now its here I am loving it. 5. Etch - can't wait to see what's launched in September. Keep up the good work Kevin & co

As a WordPress developer I 100% agree. Block development is such a pain in the ass for us developers, and there is no consistent API, similar to Elementor for example. Sometimes to achieve a basic thing you have to write literally hundreds of lines of code spread across multiple files. Styling of default elements became slightly consistent thanks to the theme.json but it's still far from perfect.

Sounds great, but I'm not very optimistic we'll see any meaningful changes, largely because WordPress has already "won". The network effect is in full effect with WordPress. No one wants to leave WordPress because the rest of the market is seriously fragmented, and lacks the scale and quality of the WordPress community and ecosystem. WordPress leadership is both scared and complacent, since there is so much more to lose. Why try to address any fundamental changes (no matter how needed), when the cost of failure is so high. It happens all the time. Look at Microsoft in the early 2000's. Once they captured a dominant position in the market, their technology began to rot (IE6 anyone?). Or Facebook. They completely own social media, and their user facing tech is hot garbage. But, no reason to change course, it all pays the same. Now we're seeing Google starting to shit themselves in search, and what are we going to do? Run to Bing? Muddling through, churning out low-grade products because there's no competition or threat pushing things ahead. All pays the same.

On point video, there is indeed a growing gap between the professional builders and the current state of WordPress. You can sense it on a lot of things: the exitement to contribute, to organize or visit a meetup or WordCamp. For some time, the covid-era was pointed as the cause of this. In my opinion that's not the whole cause. You can't break a whole CMS-workflow and don't expect there's no impact here. The whole FSE is totally misjudge by the leaders of WordPress. To be honest and i guess i'm not the only one: i feel totally estranged from the current WordPress, and i've been building sites for 18 years, with 15 years of WordPress sites. Especially on WooCommerce: i totally frown how FSE-templates will open up Pandora's boxes; and two seperate technologies are going to mismatch like crazy. It's a crazy time to be a WordPress webdesigner. In the long run, we will see. But i can assume that the new generation won't have this much patience....

The status quo has made WP owner Automatic billions of dollars. Why would they want to adapt, like Blockbuster, when they turned down the offer to buy Netflix they were making record profits. A few years later they were bankrupt. Blockbuster stakeholders should have quit at the peak and bought private islands for themselves. The owner of Automatic already has three private islands, I mean he could for all I know.

This is a refreshing perspective. I had high hopes for Gutenberg, but now it does feel like we're stuck in a bit of a rut - it feels like using MS Word for desktop publishing. We're all backing multiple horses (builders, block themes etc.), not knowing which one is going to become the dominant player. I've not been this excited about the potential for WordPress in a long time. If nothing else, this will hopefully spark some really good conversations on the future of WP, and who it's for. Fingers crossed...

Every tutorial on even the simplest thing would eventually devolve into "and then I use this premium plugin" to get (what I had assumed) to be rather basic functionality. Everybody are using different tools and different workflows and different page-builders and taking shortcuts and I can't figure out what's "best practice" or a "hack." There are such fundamental differences between full-site-editing themes and non-fse themes that I get whipash every time I try something different.
